Immerse: Team BEAR

Our project with BEAR targets a critical issue: the complex needs of foster children. Through secondary research and a site visit, we gained insights into the challenges these children face, from instability in living situations to a lack of personal belongings that reflect their identity. BEAR’s approach to this problem provides essential resources and uses portrait photography to help with adoptions. These portraits are not just for facilitating adoptions; they serve to affirm the children’s uniqueness and dignity in a system where they often feel overlooked. Our research underscored the necessity of addressing both the material and emotional needs of foster children. The insight that emerged from our work is that while tangible support is crucial, promoting the individuality of each child through personal storytelling and visibility can significantly impact their self-esteem and prospects of finding a permanent home. This strategy aligns with our findings that effective support for foster children requires more than just meeting their basic needs; it necessitates a personalized approach that acknowledges their uniqueness and potential.
