Immerse: Team The Woods Project

IMMERSE

This week, we completed Immerse. Our team started by conducting secondary research, identifying our stakeholders as coordinators, students, alumni, volunteers, TWP administration, and members of the community interested in volunteering. In addition to learning more about the mission and curriculum of TWP, we researched each potential problem space. For example, we previously identified engagement of young volunteers as a problem space. We learned many young people do not volunteer because they do not feel qualified, are afraid it will take too much time, or are not connected with a cause that motivates them.

We conducted primary research by observing a junior leadership meeting, surveying TWP students and coordinators, and interviewing a TWP alum. Through this research, we developed six key insights.

  1. TWP struggles to recruit alumni as volunteers due to communication and logistical issues.
  2. According to students and parents, TWP helps students gain confidence and manage stress.
  3. Some prospective TWP parents are unfamiliar with camping and initially hesitant to let their children participate. With time, however, they recognize that TWP as incredibly beneficial for their children.
  4. TWP junior leaders would like to take on the responsibility of helping to plan trips and express interest in volunteering after graduation.
  5. Students relate best to volunteers who are demographically similar to students.
  6. Money is a significant factor in students’ ability to participate in trips and TWP’s ability to obtain transportation for trips.

We are excited to have collected these insights and ready put them to good use as we continue to Reframe!
